TASK: Singer believes that freedom of expression is essential to any democracy and therefore should not be limited. On the other hand, Szilagyi believes that more focus should be placed on social responsibility. In the context of Singapore’s multi-racial society, where there is cultural and religious pluralism, which author’s view do you think should be adopted? Write a response of at least 300 words and 2 content paragraphs, and include materials from both articles as well as your own knowledge and experience.
Singer's believes that the freedom of expression is of key importance and plays a vital role in our society, and henceforth should not be limited. When brought in context with the Singapore society, the term "Freedom of Speech" in our very much "democratic" society when used in practical situations is actually limited. Then here comes the irony: How can it be so that freedom of speech is controlled and limited? It all boils down to the government, and of course, the multi-racial/multi-cultural nature of the state. For example in Singapore, when someone disagrees with someone else of higher authority, the former often gets sued for infamy for expressing his own views publicly, as he or she is very often someone of higher status and is well capable of doing so. Just to show what happens in our daily life, in a prestigious primary school gets on the teacher's nerves when she voices out her opinion on certain matters, the teacher, obviously not appreciating it, just snaps at her. So what is this about the controlled "freedom of speech" experienced right here in Singapore?
On the other hand, Szilagyi’s believes that more focus should be places on social responsibility. Being a multi-cultural society, we have to compromise a little here and there sometimes, because only then will we be living in a nation without wars, without riots and strikes- peace.
Therefore, I support Szilagyi’s beliefs that more emphasis should be places on social responsibility, when due respect is given to a fellow human being, life becomes much less of a hassle, where everybody learns to give and take and accept situations and cultural differences.
